The town of Don Salvador Benedicto, dubbed as the summer capital of Negros Occidental, is listed in CNN.com/Travel as the fourth coolest town in the Philippines, with Canlaon City in Negros Oriental, trailing behind.
Also known as the “Little Baguio”, Don Salvador Benedicto is 2,500 feet above sea level, with a temperature of 16 degrees centigrade, or even lower, during the whole year.
Because of its cool climate, rare flowers, fruits and vegetables thrive and abundant in Don Salvador Benedicto, which also boasts of rice terraces, waterfalls and caves. Its highway leading the town proper is lined with pine trees.
Canlaon City in Negros Oriental ranked fifth among the coolest areas in the Philippines, with Baguio City still on top of the CNN Travel list.
Rising 2,600 feet above sea level at the foot of Canlaon Volcano, the city experiences a cool microclimate with numerous waterfalls, including some that have carved natural slides down the mountains, the CNN.com/ Travel guide said.
CNN also noted a colder area on the Saddle in the Sky, a ridge dividing the two craters of Kanlaon volcano.
The two areas are located within the Northern Negros Natural Park and Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park.
Former MKNP superintendent Errol Gatumbato said that if only proper land use planning is implemented in these two upland areas, their potentials for sustainable tourism will be even higher.
Local decision makers should make use of these assessments in their development agenda, Gatumbato added.*GPB
