The office of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Region 6 has ordered an investigation on the claims that “bad food” was served to inmates of the Negros Occidental District Jail in Bago City Friday that led them to hold a noise barrage.
“We want to determine through the investigation who was at fault”, RBJMP-6 Director Senior Supt. Ignacio Panti told the DAILY STAR yesterday.
Panti, who went to the jail in Brgy. Tabunan Saturday for a dialog with the inmates, has designated Jail Officer 3 Leo Lacerna of the RBJMP-6 Investigation and Prosecution Division to lead the probe.
“After the dialog, we have threshed out the issue about the food and the situation at the jail has already normalized”, Panti said.
Supt. Hilbert Flor, jail warden of NODJ, yesterday denied that the food served to the inmates on Friday was spoiled, although he admitted that it had been stocked in the refrigerator for some time.
“We want to give priority to the inmates’ food even though we have a limited budget”, Flor said.
There are 438 inmates at the NOPJ and the budget allotted for their food is P50 for each every day.
The BJMP took over the management of the jail from the Provincial Government on July 5, and Flor assumed as jail warden the following day.*APN
