2013 WVRAA opens
in Roxas today

Negros Occidental athletes aim for another overall championship as the 2013 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet opens today in Roxas City, Capiz.

The Negrenses will compete against top athletes from the five other provinces in the region – Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, Iloilo, and host Capiz -- for the gold, silver, and bronze medals in 17 sporting events.

The opening ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Cornelio Villareal Memorial Stadium in Roxas City with Education Undersecretary Tonisito Umali and Akbayan partylist Rep. Rizza Hontiveros Baraquel as guest speakers.

Negros Occidental hosted the event last year at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium and dominated the competition in both elementary and secondary division to remain as the overall champion.

This year, the province is sending 500 athletes to WVRAA, who will be billeted at the Pres. Manuel Roxas Memorial School in Roxas.

In elementary division, the Negrense athletes will be defending their title in basketball, girls’ badminton, girls’ chess, football, softball, boys’ and girls’ swimming, boys’ and girls’ table tennis, girl’s taekwondo, boys and girl’s tennis, and girl’s volleyball.

In secondary competition, Negros won last year in boys’ and girls’ badminton, baseball, boys’ basketball, boxing, boys’ chess, sepak takraw, softball, boys’ and girls’ swimming, boys’ and girls’ table tennis, boys’ and girls’ tennis, and girls’ volleyball.

Iloilo, a perennial runner-up to Negros Occidental, captured the championship last year in elementary boys’ and girls’ athletics, boys’ badminton, baseball, sipa, boys’ taekwondo, and boys’ volleyball, as well as the title in secondary boys’ and girls’ arnis, boys’ and girls’ athletics, girls’

basketball, boys’ football, girls’ taekwondo and boys’ volleyball.

Landing at third place overall last year is this year’s host, Capiz province, while Aklan finished fourth, Antique at fifth place, and Guimaras at the bottom of the ranking.

Gold medalists in the WVRAA will compose the region’s contingent to the 2013 Palarong Pambansa to be hosted by Dumaguete Cit in April.*NAB
