| Santacruzan in Bacolod
Young ladies in glittering gowns paraded along Araneta Street in downtown Bacolod City, in celebration of the Santacruzan, the Festival of the Holy Cross, on Saturday, a press release from organizers said.
Spectators watched and cheered as children and the sagalas proceeded to the SM Event Center for a ceremony. Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, who was the guest speaker, expressed the appreciation of the city government to the Bacolod Cultural Foundation that has been hosting the religious event for the past 26 years, the press release also said.
The activity was also in partnership with the Bacolod City government, the Negros Occidental Cultural and Sports Foundation, and SM.
The Santacruzan tradition, introduced to the Philippines by the Spaniards, honors the story of Saint Helena. She and her son, Constantine the Great, emperor of the Byzantine Empire, made a pilgrimage to Calvary in the hope of finding the original cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, the press release added.*

UNO-R to honor
pioneer faculty
Pioneer administrators, faculty and graduates of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos will be honored in a luncheon tomorrow, at the main lobby of the school as part of the culminating activities of its golden anniversary, a press release from the school said.
Gloria Tajanlangit, former grade school principal; and Jose Montalvo, former dean of the College of Law, are two pioneer administrators who will be awarded during the ceremony, that will give recognition to those who served the university in its maiden academic year of 1962-63, under the Recollect administration.
The High School Class ’63 and the honor graduates of Batch ’63 will also be recognized. Rev. Fr. Cornelio Moral, executive chair of UNO-R@50, will give the message, the press release said.
Other activities on May 23 are a thanksgiving mass to be officiated by Rev. Fr. Lauro Larlar, prior provincial of the OAR Province of St. Ezekiel Moreno, at 8:30 a.m.; motorcade at 10 a.m.; opening of exhibits, 2 p.m.; urban greening program, 3 p.m., and a concert at the university gym, 6 p.m.
Activities on May 24 will be a thanksgiving mass with Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra, at 8:30 a.m.; basketball game, Religious vs UNO-R employees; and conferment of the honoris causa to Rufus Rodriguez at 4 p.m.; while on May 25, Bishop Gerardo Alminaza will officiate at the mass at 9 a.m.; blessing of the UNO-R@50 marker; motorcade at 1:30 p.m.; awarding of the alumni achievers at L’Fisher Hotel, 6 p.m., and a fireworks display, 9 p.m., the press release added.* back to top

win tilt in Cebu
The Computer Science students of the University of St. La Salle and their team were first runner-up in the 1st Startup Weekend Cebu held at the University of the Philippines-Cebu recently, a press release from the school said.
The entry titled, Luto.co, an android application written by Franz Sarmiento and twins Edbert Kim and Edbert Kent Araña, was a standout in the competition, the press release said. The winner, however, was not indicated.
Meanwhile, the school will conduct an “Admission on the Road” at the Cadiz City gym from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow, in celebration of its diamond jubilee year.
Interested incoming freshmen students are urged to bring an NSO copy of the birth certificate, medical certificate, CSAT scoresheet, principal’s recommendation, Form 138 or report card, and the NCAE result, when they come for the admission, the press release added.* back to top  |
