“I will kneel before them if they want, so they could forgive my son”
This was the message of the father of the 16-year-old suspect in the brutal killing of Dr. Andres Gumban to the family and friends of the doctor, when interviewed by ABS-CBN Bacolod yesterday.
Until now, he said, they find it hard to believe that his son did the crime even after he saw the video taken of how Gumban was killed.
A 5-minute-18-second video was released to the media by City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz Tuesday showing how the suspects took turns in stabbing Gumban at his house at DC2 Regent Pearl Homes Subdivision, Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod.
The video also showed the 16-year-old taking the video of himself, smiling, winking and humming with the body of Gumban as in the background.
The father added that no lawyer would accept when asked to defend his son after the cellular phone video was shown.
The suspect’s father also said he could not understand what made his son do the heinous crime. His son used to be an honor-student, a varsity badminton player, and once joined the Palarong Pambansa representing Negros Occidental.
He said he arrived from the Middle East, where he works as a plumber on Saturday when he learned of the incident, while his wife who is also in the Middle East, could not come home yet.
Gumban sustained 34 stab wounds and his throat was slashed, the autopsy conducted by City Medico Legal Officer Ely Cong showed.
Robbery with homicide/murder charges have already been filed against the 16-year-old from Cadiz City, and his companion and classmate Fof Pascual, 18, of Sagay City before the Bacolod City Prosecutor’s Office.
Pascual has been brought to the Bacolod City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology while the 16-year-old is now in the custody of the Social Development Center.*APN
