We congratulate the Western Visayas contingent that we sent to the Palarong Pambansa games that were held in Pangasinan and ended this weekend. For us they were the real winners, even if the records say that it was the group from the National Capital Region that romped away with the championship – again.
The Western Visayas athletes, representing the best from the provinces of Region Six, competed competently and put their heart and souls in all the disciplines that they vied in. They also grabbed a big number of medals, especially golds, showing their abilities and fighting spirit.
And still, they could not topple the opponents from the NCR who represented cities and schools whose athletes come from other parts of the country other than Metro Manila and, aside from being the pick of the lot, also enjoy the best facilities and equipment available, compared to those from the other regions, particularly the areas considered among the poorest in the country.
It is therefore no wonder that, for TEN continuous years, the NCR has been winning the crown in this meet, leaving the rest to contend for the lesser prizes. In the West Visayas, particularly in Negros Occidental where we are aware of the preparations made by our athletes, their coaches and officials, we are fortunate that our contingent members are fired with the proper spirit and encouragement that have fuelled their efforts to do their best.
This year, West Visayas again ranked second to NCR. But, as far as we, their rooters in the region are concerned, they are also champions, in fact, our real champions.
So congratulations to all the boys and girls who participated in the games, and to their officials who trained, inspired and prodded them to perform at their peak. Keep up the spirit, your fellow Western Visayans are proud of you.*
