After giving Western Visayas a gold medal in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa in Lingayen, Pangasinan, John Paul Gubaton gave his mother club, Lopue’s Table Tennis Association, another reason to celebrate with a dominant performance in the 2012 TATAP Visayas Selection Tournament held recently in Mandaue City, Cebu.
Gubaton, remained No. 1 in the singles boys’ under 17 category as he prevailed over fellow Bacoleños Siegfred Tupas and Francis Garganian in the finals.
Their feat allowed the team from LOPTTA to finish with four gold medals, four silvers, and one bronze in the tournament joined by young table tennis athletes in the Visayas region.
Bowing to Gubaton in the final round, Tupas and Garganian settled for silver, while Ralph Nones of Antique grabbed the bronze.
Garganian also took the bronze in the singles open, while another LOPTTA standout, John Michael Castro, booked the first runner-up honors in Boys 14 under category after yielding to Jann Marie Nayre of Cebu in the final (3-2).
In the women’s department, another 2012 Palarong Pambansa standout, Emy Rose Dael, took home two gold medals in the 14 and 17 under girls’ category.
It was another all-LOPTTA showdown in the championship round as Dael was challenged by teammate Angela Borbon in the final. Dael prevailed, 3-2, allowing Borbon to pick up the silver medal and Ciara Deretcho of Danao, the bronze.
Rose Jean Fadol, also of LOPTTA, beat Grace Alkuino of Danao (3-0) to win the championship in the 17 under girls’ event while Thelly Ann Marie Jungco of Antique took the bronze.
The tournament was conducted by the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines headed by Ting Ledesma. Winners of the tournament in the age group category will represent the Visayas region in the national selection to be held in October in Manila.
Those who will qualify in the national selection will have the chance of representing the country in international tournaments.*
