Dengue cases increased by 44.5 percent in Western VisayasfromJanuary to June this year, but decreased in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City, Dr. Joji Jimenez, Department of Health Dengue Regional Medical Coordinator, said yesterday.
Jimenez saidWV dengue cases in 2012 were 1,626 compared to 1,125 last year or an increase of 44.5 percent.
There were also 28 deaths recorded in WV this year compared to 15 last year of an increase of 86.66 percent, DOH data furnished by Jimenez shows.
But in Negros Occidental denguecases dropped to 215, or by 56.91 percent this year, compared to 499 in 2011, she said.
This year two deaths were reported in Negros Occidental comparedto seven last year, the DOH report showed.
In Bacolod City cases recorded this year were 84 compared to 190 in 2011 or a decreaseof 55.79 percent, it added.
Bacolod also has one dengue death this year compared to three in the same period last year, the DOH data shows.
Dengue cases in Antique were also down to 60 from 90 last year.
Areas with increases in dengue casesare Aklan – 158 this year from 59 in 2011, Capiz 70 from 23, Guimaras – 109 from 17, Iloilo 373 from 140 and Iloilo City – 546 from 94, the DOH data showed.
Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, Negros Occidental provincial health officer, attributed the drop in dengue cases in the province to clean up campaigns and massive information drives against dengue.*CPG
