Market security beefed up

Security will be beefed up at the Bacolod City Central Market following several theft complaints, City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, said yesterday.

Teodora Silva, Officer-in-charge of the Central Market, said there are policemen assigned in the area only during night time but none during day time.

Silva said that when Chief Insp. Luisito Acebuche was still the commander of Police Station 1, there were policemen on duty at the market 24 hours but some of them were relieved when Acebuche left.

She said they also placed mesh wires on the roof of the market, as a preemptive measure, so thieves could not climb in from there.

De la Paz said he will order Station 1 commander, Chief Insp. Adonis Rosales to add policemen at the market because as of the moment, only employees of the City Public Safety Office are assigned at the area.

He said that police presence at the market will be a deterrent to petty crimes like theft and snatching.*APN

Driver of dredger
found dead

A septuagenarian who worked as dredger machine driver and operator at the Bacolod City Real Estate Development Corporation port was found dead at his work place at about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Case investigator Police Officer 2 Christopher Profeta identified the casualty as Edilberto Bascug, 72, of Tanza town, Cavite, who was temporarily staying at the BREDCO port.

Profeta said that Bascug’s co-workers told the police that he was playing chess with their other co-worker, whose name was not disclosed, after 6 p.m. when he complained of a headache and decided to sleep at their resting area.

Minutes later, Bascug’s co-worker Elpidio Casipe, 69, noticed that he was no longer breathing, prompting him to call their other companions, who called the police and the members of Rescue 117, Profeta also said.

He said Bascug could have died of cardiac arrest, and that his relatives had informed them that Bascug had been suffering from diabetes and hyper- tension.

Profeta added that Bascug’s family is no longer interested to have his body autopsied as they believe that there was no foul play in his death.*APN

Cops nab more
jai alai operators

More jai alai operators were apprehended by the police in barangays Villamonte and 36 in Bacolod City Thursday.

Station 1 policemen and members of the Regional Special Operations Group arrested Grace Panes, 29, Frank Dela Torre, 33 and Joy Ison, 70, of Quezon Avenue in Brgy. 36 who were allegedly caught in the act of collecting bets for jai alai in the barangay at about 7 p.m.

Senior Police Officer 2 Jerome Palacio and Police Officer 1 Leopoldo Semillano seized several tipsters with the codename “Fronton”, tally sheets and betting stubs, a ballpen and P550 in cash from those apprehended.

Policemen also seized a Honda wave motorcycle believed to be used by the suspects in transporting jai alai paraphernalia.

Station 4 policemen also arrested Zaldy Senoro, 54, of Purok Progreso in Brgy.Taculing, Vicente Javelona, 45, of Brgy. Villamonte and John Rey Yulo, 20, of Purok Milagrosa in Brgy. Sum-ag, at Ylac-Javelona Streets, Villamonte at about 9:45 p.m. also for alleged jai alai operations.

Senior Insp. Dianne Grace Aquitania, station 4 chief, said they recovered a ballpen, a calculator, a notebook, four bundles of betting stubs, tally sheets and two tipsters with the codename “Guitar” from the arrested suspects.
