Bacolod City Police Deputy Director, Supt. Joseph Bayan, yesterday warned the public against a group of swindlers victimizing the families of the Overseas Filipino Workers, after they duped the wife of an OFW Saturday.
The complainant, 56, whose identity is being withheld by the police for security reasons, said she got a call at about 9:30 a.m. from a certain “Rodolfo Go”, who introduced himself as an Ambassador of the Philippines to Saudi Arabia, informing her that her husband needs money.
She said that Go told her that her husband was wounded and was hospitalized following a fight with an unidentified engineer whom, her husband allegedly killed.
The complainant added that Go told her to remit money at different pawnshops to a certain Romwel Celedio. She said that she sent P42,000 on the same day via Palawan pawnshop and P67,000 through RD pawnshop.
However, she later learned that her husband was not hospitalized and that she was only swindled.
Bayan said that in cases like this, the relatives of OFWs should verify with their love ones by calling them before sending money. He said that probably these swindlers belong to an organized group operating nationwide and that they have other cohorts in other provinces.
Bayan also said that they will intensify their intelligence monitoring on these swindlers so they could arrest them.
He advised those who will receive similar calls to report to the nearest police before sending money.*APN
