The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office is encouraging persons with disabilities in Negros Oriental to join the ongoing online registration for the differently-abled, a government press release said.
The activity includes the registration of PWD voters for the 2013 election.
“We are gathering data to capture the number of PWDs in each local government unit in the province,” Alice Lagarde of the Provincial DSWD said in the press release.
Meanwhile, the 34th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week will be commemorated July 17 to 23 in Dumaguete City.
PWDs in Negros Oriental, specifically The Great Physician Rehabilitation Foundation Inc., will spearhead the activities lined up for the NDPR Week, Rolando Villamero Jr., coordinator of the GPRehab Advocacy, Networking, and Referral, said.
Villamero said the NDPR Week aims to stimulate public awareness on the issues and problems of disability, thereby encouraging every Filipino to take an active role in uplifting the economic and social conditions of PWDs.
The program will culminate on the birth date of national hero Apolinario Mabini, the “Sublime Paralytic,” whose bravery and heroic acts during the Philippine Revolution of 1896, despite his disability, greatly influenced his compatriots in fighting against the tyrants who ruled the Philippines, he added.
This year’s theme is “Mainstreaming PWDs in Economic Development.”
The Dumaguete City Handicapped Association and the Ten Outstanding Persons with Disabilities in Negros Oriental Alumni Community have set activities that are geared towards making the NDPR Week a meaningful activity, not only for PWDs but to the community as a whole.*RG
