The 2nd Congressman Jules Ledesma Boxing Cup opened yesterday with boxers from the cities of Escalante and San Carlos dominating the scheduled 13 bouts with four wins and two losses each at the Calatrava Covered Gym.
Don Salvador Benedicto registered three wins and two loses, while Toboso and host Calatrava had one win apiece.
Joining the three-day tournament, dubbed “Blow by Blow sa Unang Distrito”, are pugs representing their local government unit in preparation for the 2nd Negros First Boxing Championship set in October this year.
Greg Pableo led Escalante’s surge as he beat on points Calatrava’s Michael Keven Tellics in the 26 kgs., while his teammate Rogie Nardo won in a close fight over Arnel Villacencio of Don Salvador Benedicto.
The fight between Nardon and Villacencio was considered by the organizers as the best fight in the 52 kgs. as both fighters showed remarkable talent and endurance.
James Mahinay gave Escalante its third win by beating San Carlos City’s Caesar Peñalosa in the Elite 12-23 years old 49 kgs, while Ali Agapusa nailed the team’s fourth win by outclassing another San Carlos pug, Ricky Amar, in the 52 kgs.
Despite suffering heartbreaking losses to Escalante, San Carlos kept pace with the latter with its own four wins courtesy of J. Abdon in 30 kgs, Mark Mahilum, Gerald Beleganilao in 46 kgs., and Feliciano Santiago in 52 kgs.
Abdon had a convincing win over Nataniel Medriyano, while Mahilum earned the judges’ approval in his fight against Escalante’s Vicmar Sagayle.
Beleganilao prevailed over Jonel De la Cruz of Don Salvador Benedicto, while Santiago stopped JR Vargas of Calatrava in the first round of their fight.
DSB pugs registered two referee-stopped first round victories against their opponents courtesy of cousins Elmer Duoma and Mike Gian Duoma.
Elmer dominated the fight in 32 kgs against Calatrava’s Jemark Gonzaga, while Mike Gian pummeled into submission another Calatrava fighter, Patrick Pabalate, in the 38 kgs. division.
Another relative, Randy Duoma, won over Jonathan Helly of Calatrava in 46 kgs. to give DSB a three-win output in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Calatrava’s lone win was delivered by John Teddy Gustaman over Escalante’s Vince Martin Martirizan in 28 kgs., while Toboso scored a victory with its lone entry Fedonis Bulanon, who beat San Carlos’ JR Patok in the Youth 17-18 years old 46 kgs.
The second phase of the tournament is set today at 2 p.m. in the same venue with more than 20 bouts scheduled, including the women’s category.*NAB
