‘Swertres’ usher, collector
in 2 NegOr towns collared

A suspected usher and a collector of the illegal numbers game “swertres” were nabbed in separate incidents in Sta. Catalina and Sibulan towns, in Negros Oriental Sunday.

Sta. Catalina police arrested a certain Joseph Macalinog, 27, of Barangay San Jose, who was allegedly caught in the act of collecting bets in the town. Recovered from him were three stubs with number combinations on them and more than P400 in cash believed to be bet proceeds.

In Sibulan, police arrested a certain Reynald Diones, 35, married, of Barangay Tubtubon after a tip from a concerned citizen who said the suspect was collecting “swertres” materials.

Oriental braces for ‘Ramon’

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Negros Oriental has alerted the towns and cities of the province to take precautionary measures as Tropical Depression Ramon, spotted off Surigao, is expected to cut across parts of Central Visayas this week.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, a severe weather bulletin issued by PAG-ASA said Tropical Depression Ramon was located 560 km ESE of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum winds of 55kph and moving westward at 15 kph. If there is no change in movement, its center will pass Cebu, Northern Negros then Northern Panay by Thursday.

Storm signal No. 1 is hoisted over Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island, Surigao Sur and Dinagat Island, the weather bulletin which Tiongson passed on to the local DRRMCs, said.

Diana Jill Rivera, one of two Filipina members of the household staff of Libya’s ousted leader Muammad Gadaffi, is now doing volunteer relief work for Bulacan flood victims as she and her co-worker in the Gadaffi household, Mary Ann Ducos, are waiting to start work at a hotel in Cebu City.

The older sister, Jennifer, said in a telephone interview that Diana Jill has been volunteering at the Blas F. Ople Policy Center since their return to the country and has since been reunited with her 5-year old son, Jaylord, and the Rivera family, who originally hail from Manjuyod, Negros Oriental.
