Drive against
GMO to jumpstart

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Greenpeace Southeast Asia-Philippines is planning to introduce various campaigns, especially against genetically modified organisms and other environment-related issues in Negros Oriental.

Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning non-government organization that acts to change attitudes and behavior, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace, said Daniel Ocampo, its campaigner.

One campaign that Greenpeace would like to introduce in Negros Oriental is the Sustainable Agriculture and Genetic Engineering, “which seeks to protect our biological diversity from genetically modified organisms,” he said.

The campaign supports organic agriculture that focuses on health, ecology, fairness and socially responsible farming. He said they are asking for support from restaurants by rejecting Bt eggplant and other GMOs in their food.

A Greenpeace Cocktail Night was scheduled yesterday in Dumaguete, aimed to introduce its core values to possible partners and allies in Dumaguete City, and get support for the SAGE campaign from restaurant owners and food establishments.

Ocampo said representatives from food establishments, local government units, and the academe, specifically the Negros Oriental State University, have been invited.*JFP
