Azkals leaves for
Bahrain tomorrow

To familiarize themselves with the Middle East condition, the Philippine national men’s football team, Azkals, is leaving for Bahrain tomorrow in preparation for their first encounter against Kuwait in the two-leg series of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier second round match.

The Azkals will play the Kuwaitis in the latter’s home ground at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium on July 23 in the first leg and will host their opponents at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila for the second leg on July 28.

While in Bahrain, the Azkals will play two tune-up games against the Bahrain national squad on Saturday at the National Stadium in Riffa and on Monday at the Muharraq Club Stadium in Arad.

More schools to join
UniGames in Capiz

Some of the schools that had boycotted the recent Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games in Zamboanga City have informed the organizers of this year’s National University Games that they will join the competition set on October 22 – 29 in Capiz.

UniGames president Roger Banzuela said the deadline of confirmation for all participating schools is on August 19 and they are expecting more institutions to join.

Last year, 46 schools all over the country joined the UniGames in Dumaguete City.

Ateneo, UP ladies
post win in UAAP

Ateneo de Manila and University of the Philippines booked contrasting victories yesterday to kick off the University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Lady Eagles rallied from as many as 16 points down in the first half to frustrate the National University Lady Bulldogs, 51-39, while University of the Philippines sent University of the East reeling to a 64-52 rout.

Samantha Ong was the only double-digit scorer with 11 points for the Lady Eagles, who woke up after a disastrous first two quarters and rallied back in the game with a balanced offensive that saw eight others contributing to the victory.
