Rebel returnee cries rape
vs. squad leader of NPA
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A single mother, 22, and a former member of the underground movement claimed she was raped by a squad leader of the New People’s Army, she identified as a certain Misael dela Cruz alias Ka Jimlan.

Elvie Rebanuel, of Sitio Kakha, Barangay Talalak, Sta. Catalina, who recently left the rebel movement, said she was raped when she was 16-years-old while in the company of rebels in the hinterland barangays of Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental.

She claimed that she was invited by a certain Rosito dela Cruz to attend a barrio fiesta in Tamlang-Mantiquil area more than six years ago, only to find herself already in the flock of rebels along with other minors, because it was the anniversary of the New People’s Army in December 2004.

Veterans mark 66th
NegOr liberation day
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

World War II veterans from Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental Tuesday marked the 66th liberation day from the clutches of imperial Japan with a program at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center.

About 300 World War II veterans were joined by their children up to the third generation in honoring their dead comrades, with the community singing of the “Guerilla Serenade.”

Judge Venancio Aldecoa Jr., commander of the 2nd Negros Oriental Veterans District, noted the dwindling number of veterans in the province, who are now counted as the lost generation. But, he said, people should remember that “We owe our freedom to the soldiers and the guerillas during the war.”

IN SIATON
Tambobo Bay port fizzles out
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Plans to construct another port in Siaton, Negros Oriental, fizzled out due to its depth and the accessibility problem for big vessels and fastcrafts in Tambobo Bay, in the town.

Mayor Albert Ator said Tambobo Bay, that is haven to hundreds of foreign yachts during typhoons, has shallow waters, and is not accessible for inter-island vessels.

Instead of a pier, Ator said the construction of a Tambobo Bay boulevard costing P18 million near the abandoned wharf, should be considered rather than a pier for passenger vessels, while the local government unit and the Philippine Ports Authority has to determine its legality in the area.
