Noy, Mar leading
in latest survey

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The latest Pulse Asia survey released yesterday showed Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III of the Liberal Party still dominating other presidential aspirants, LP senatorial candidate Alex Lacson said yesterday.

The survey conducted from Feb. 21 to 25 shows that Aquino is the preferred presidential bet, with 36 percent.

The recent Pulse Asia survey, conducted on 1,800 respondents nationwide, reaffirms the result of the Taylor Nelson Sofres survey conducted January 28 to February 3, where Aquino was shown to have an 11 percent lead over Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party.

Lacson said that in the recent Pulse Asia Survey, Villar got 29 percent, former President Joseph Estrada – 18, Gilbert Teodoro Jr. – 7 and Bro. Eddie Villanueva - 2.

This means that Aquino led Villar by 7 percent, he said.

In the same survey, Aquino’s running mate Senator Mar Roxas leads by 43 percent for the vice-presidential candidates over Loren Legarda of the National People’s Coalition who came in a far second at 27 percent.

NP senatorial candidate and spokesman Gilbert Remulla said the latest Pulse Asia results showed that Villar maintained a considerable strong showing despite being the target of attacks by his rivals from various political camps, a press release said.

Remulla said that while the NP standard-bearer lost some grounds, the real story is that his closest rival, Aquino, will never be able to recover his previous high rating of 50 percent to 60 percent.

Lacson said he believes that, despite the millions of campaign ads poured by Aquino’s closest rival, the Filipino voters are intelligent and will eventually vote with their conscience.

He said the survey for senatorial candidates may be released next week but he is confident that he will be doing okay since there are many groups supporting him.

Lacson said the Daily Inquirer feature story on him titled “12 Things one can do to help Alex Lacson win a senate seat” was a virtual endorsement. Many offered to help him after that, he said.

“It has snowballed and we are getting stronger and stronger everyday in every region,” Lacson said, adding that he hopes it will also snowball in Negros and his performance will improve.

If Negros Occidental and Oriental are put together, that is a total of 2.4 million voters who can elect a senator, he said.

“We can always elect a senator if we want to as long as we unite. We hope Negros will be united this time around since we have the power to elect one senator, not only now, but in the future,” he added.

Lacson said “We should campaign for one island, one Negros where we are united.” If Cebu could have two senators we can do the same, he said.

Meanwhile, Lacson was invited to speak before the provincial congress of the Liga ng mga Barangay of Batangas at Casino Filipino in Bacolod City yesterday upon the invitation of its national president Archie Echiveri.

He said Echiveri has been supportive of him because he saw that he can champion the interest and causes of the barangay officials, particularly in the implementation of Section 393 of the Local Government Code involving the benefits of barangay officials.*CGS
