The Philippines needs nearly 17,000 megawatts additional capacity within the next 20 years to ensure power supply sufficiency.

Speaking at the Philippine Economic briefing yesterday, Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes said the Luzon grid would require an additional 11,900MW, Visayas with 2,150MW and Mindanao with 2,500MW or a total of 16,550MW nationwide, a government press release said.

Reyes explained that this additional capacity was computed using the 4.6 growth yearly.

DOLE to hold first summit
on workplace health, safety

The Department of Labor and Employment Region 6, in collaboration with its partners – government, employers and workers sectors – will hold the 1st Occupational Health and Safety Summit in Western Visayas, at the Iloilo Grand Hotel tomorrow, a press release from DOLE said.

It also said most companies shun the idea of implementing health and safety programs in their workplaces or worksites as it is expensive without realizing the consequences of workplace accidents and illnesses, particularly in terms of days lost or cost.

There is ample evidence to prove that firms and offices that invest in the OSH program, through advocacy and training have lower accident rates and higher productivity so OSH has high return on investment and high pay-back in material and human terms, the press release said.
