Iloilo builds up organic agri

The provincial government of Iloilo is strengthening its advocacy on organic farming and currently holding a conference on “Technology Updating in Organic Agriculture.”

The conference was attended by various farmers associations and agricultural technologists in the province as well as stakeholders from the agriculture sector.

Provincial Agriculture Office chief Dr. Ildefonso Toledo said the technology on organic agriculture had long been promoted by the Iloilo provincial government.

He added that many farmers have already adopted the organic agriculture system for its effectiveness and low cost.

Toledo said the adoption of organic agriculture is beneficial to the environment as it mitigates climate change. He also cited that chemical fertilizers contribute to greenhouse gases which intensify global warming.

The conference includes discussion on the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 which urges farmers to use and produce purely organic fertilizers, as well as encourages the adoption of organic agricultural system as a viable alternative.

Meanwhile, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor said that he fully supports the use of organics, considering the vast agricultural potentials of the province's produce.*PNA
