| Two instructional materials, “Biology: A Laboratory Manual” and the “College Physics 1 Laboratory Manual,” were launched at the President’s Hall of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos recently.
The manuals authored by College of Arts and Sciences faculty Ronnie Gicana and Dr. Vilma Azucena, respectively, were designed for three-hour instruction per week, a UNO-R press release said.
Gicana is a Bachelor of Science in Biology graduate, major in Microbiology, of University of the Philippines-Los Baños, and a Master of Science in Environmental Biology from UP-Visayas.
He is president of the Philippine Society of Microbiology-Visayas. Besides General Biology, he teaches Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Human Genetics, Microbiology, and Research, the press release said.
Azucena is a Bachelor of Chemistry graduate of the now West Negros University, a Master of Arts in Teaching General Science from Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, and a Master of Arts in School Administration and Supervision from WNU.
Having been conferred with the Most Outstanding Academic Excellence Award, she was a distinguished graduate of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management of UNO-R. As CAS faculty, she teaches Physics, Chemistry, Ecology, and Earth Science. She is a recipient of Philippine Physics Society 2009 Galileo Award, it added.

Children’s book day held
The SM Supermalls’ Corporate Social Responsibility program, SM Cares, through its Committee on Youth and Children’s Welfare, held the National Children’s Book Day simultaneously in its malls nationwide recently.
In Bacolod, the celebration was attended by the pupils and teachers of Trinity Christian School, Fr. Gratian Murray Integrated School, A. Mabini Elementary School, A.L. Lizares Elementary School, Vista Alegre-Granada Relocation Elementary School and Abkasa Elementary School.
The National Children’s Book Day was highlighted by Storytelling Sessions hosted by ABS-CBN celebrity moms Carmela Gamboa and Honey Grace Catalan who told the stories “Why Do Birds Build Nests?” and Y”ummy Fly Pie.”
A total of 500 books were also donated to the five elementary public schools in order to help augment book shortage in their libraries.
Part of the program was the Character Costume Contest and the three best character costumes from Trinity Christian School won prizes from SM management, the press release said.
There was also an entertainment by World of Fun mascot, Woffy and SM Little Stars 2009 winner Gabrielle Louise Ramos rendered an intermission number, it added.*

songwriting tilt on
The Silver MassKara Festival Organization, organizers of the MassKara Festival of Bacolod, has launched the Dance Parade Songwriting Competition for the 31st MassKara Festival.
The winning song will be used, primarily, for the streetdancing competitions, Eli Francis Tajanlangit, festival director, said in a press release.
The competition is open to all amateur and professional songwriters, regardless of current address or citizenship, and only, as specified in the guidelines, to compose a dance parade song that speaks of Bacolod – its attractions, its smiling people, and the city’s love for merry-making, street dancing, and life in general – and shall engage one and all to dance, sing, chant, and enjoy this year’s festival, the press release said.
The grand prize winner will receive P20,000 in cash and a trophy, while seven consolation prize winners will receive P3,000 each, it said.
The song must be an original composition, must be between 6 to 8 minutes long, and its lyrics must primarily be in the Ilonggo dialect, although an option to mix it with English, to a minimum, may be allowed, the press release added.
The song may be a collaboration of one, to a maximum of three persons, in doing the lyrics and the music. It has to be musically arranged and recorded. The contestant shall take responsibility of having the song arranged in a danceable upbeat tempo or rhythm.
The entries will be judged on the following criteria: music (30 percent), lyrics (30 percent), originality/appeal (10 percent), danceability potential (20 percent), and recall (10 percent).
Interested songwriters may avail of the Registration Forms and Contest Rules and Mechanics at the SMFO Office at San Juan Street, Bacolod City.
Deadline for submission of entries is at 5 p.m. on August 21, 2010 at the Silver MassKara Festival Organization office.

Visual arts fair starts June 29
ManilART 10, the country’s biggest visual arts fair, will bring together some of most dynamic art houses from the different regions of the Philippines at the Mall of Asia’s SMX Convention Hall June 29 to August 1.
These regional galleries include Bacolod’s Gallery Orange, Baguio’s Tam-awan Village Art Gallery, Cebu’s Art N Nature Gallery, and the Gallery of Davao, a ManilArt press release said.
Gallery Orange is the first professionally-run gallery in Negros. Borne out of the creative collaboration between visual artist Charlie Co and businessman-artist Bong Lopue, Gallery Orange hopes to contribute the elevation of art consciousness among members of the Negrense community, the press release added.
