With the popularization of computer use down to the grade school level, school children have started to discover and explore what the new technology offers them. As a result, many of them seem to have reduced their interest on good ol’ reading. But not for these sixth graders of Paglaum Village Elementary School in Bacolod City under Section 1 adviser, Dalla Batisla-on. In this week’s YOUNG LIVES, the pupils tell something about their reading fare.

Aeron Julius L. Foribio, 10

“I want to be an
engineer no matter what.”

I always like the Bible. I like the stories of characters, like David, Elijah, and especially Jesus. I like reading it  because there are lessons in every story. Jesus is my favorite Biblical character because he is good hearted and he is responsible for all that we have on earth.

Also, I like to read science books, like Biology because I like animals. I know my lessons in Biology because I like to read books like these. I read it from my Tita’s college books. I like anything related to science.

I also like to read comics because I am entertained of the jokes. When I read comics I usually laugh, cry or sometimes I am angry because of the characters and the mood of the story. I like to read especially Snoopy comics.

Jason P. Tuya, 12

“I want to be a teacher.”

I like to read comic books. I like them because I want adventures in different places with big and scary animals. Then I want to get good moral story from and share it to my cousins and friends.

I like comics also  because I like cartoons; comic books are so funny to read.

Dan Rex A. Gabala

“I want to be a doctor
and cure the sick.”

I want to read  the newspaper  because I want to know what is happening in other countries and in other parts of the world. Also, I want to know more on politics, sports, and entertainment. I like to read the newspaper  because I can get knowledge form it and tips on how to succeed in life.

Mark Laurence Seplo, 11

“I will be an engineer in the future!”

I like anime comics. I also want to read books to discover other things. I also like to read the Bible because I want to review history. I want to know Jesus’ story in details. I also  read my notebook so that I can study our lessons since I want my family to be happy when I’m an honor student.

John Ryan Ramos, 11

“Doctor- it’s what
I want to become!”

I want to read comic books because I want to clip pictures of my favorite anime characters. I want to read happy ending stories also. Comic books have very cool pictures and amazing stories.

Trisha Anne Gonzaga, 12

“I want to be a nurse.”

I want to read magazines and newspapers. Just like Star Studio, Total Girl and Daily Star. I like these because they are very interesting and I can be informed what’s happening around the country.

I like Science and HeKASi books, too; I like to know about the universe and about our past Philippine presidents.

Alyssa Marie Sumugat, 13

“I will be a Career Woman!”

There are so many things that I really want to read. One of them is  the magazine. There are so many interesting things in it and it gives me more knowledge and lessons in life. I like showbiz mags: stars, revelations, secrets. Also,  I am thrilled reading about showbiz couples.

Angelique S. Tumbagahan, 12

“I want to be a doctor someday.”

I love ghost stories and sometimes pocketbooks. It makes me scared even  if they are  not real. Pocketbooks  make me fall in love and happy because in the end, characters will live happily ever after.

Carissa Mae Sibog, 12

“Teaching will be my profession.”

Anything, as in, I like to read anything. But I like comics the most. It is very entertaining and funny. I also like science books. It’s a good thing to know about our environment, inventors, like who invented this and that.

Sarah Jane Laurico, 12

“I want to be a singer!”

My hobby is reading. And one of the best stories I read was “The War Makes Me Sad.” It was about a young girl who lives somewhere in Mindanao. I read it when I took the test given by the librarian in our school. I really like the story. I realize how hard it is for the children in places where there is war. The girl tells her story and what life is like in the battle zone. I felt pity for them.

I am thankful to live in a safe and peaceful place, eat well,  live well and  be at home. The characters stay in a relocation area and sleeps on the floor. Children don’t attend classes. They don’t have a school.

The book tells the real situation. I thank the author for writing the book. After reading, I told myself, “I am very, very lucky!” And I should be contented with what I have now. I hope that everyone would realize that war is never a good remedy to solve our problems.
