In China 's Special Autonomous Region of Macau , it is not unusual to overhear someone on the sidewalks ask his or her companion, “Diin ka makadto haw?” In a place where Chinese, Portuguese or English are the common languages, Filipino dialects can be heard anywhere.

Macau is one of the popular destinations of overseas Filipino workers, now numbering about 20,000 – not only as domestic helpers – but also as professionals, entertainers and employees, including in its casinos and restaurants, which make the island a well-known gambling haven.

Earlier known as Ma Gao, the place was explored by the Portuguese in the 1550s who found fishermen from Fujian and farmers from Guangdong settled in the island. It was then a trading gate because of its location of the mouth of the Pearl River .

With the presence of thousands of Filipinos in the island, which is 45 minutes via seajet from Hong Kong , the Philippine government has announced the establishment of a consulate there.

Macau, which has a population of about half a million,, can be reached from Shenzhen in 80 minutes and buy bus from Guangzhou by almost three hours.

Among the marvels of Macau are the Ruins of St. Paul , the Macau Tower , the Kun Iam Statue, lighthouses and villages,. Museums as well as cultural sites and temples.
