R-Day, or Recycling Day, has received wide support from various organizations in Bacolod City . R-Day activities were held recently at SM City with the office of Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue supporting it. The program focused on the theme, “Let's Segregate on 2008! Make Recycling a Habit!”

R-Day serves as a trading activity to transform trash to cash and as a venue for education programs on environmental awareness with the participating groups encouraging the public to segregate waste matters. At the commemoration last Sunday, participants threw cans, bottles, plastic materials and papers separately into properly-labelled receptacles at the SM North Terminal.

The trading activity allowed participants to sell their scrap papers, newspapers, cardboards empty ink and toner cartridges, plastic bottles and scraps, used lead batteries, aluminum and tin cans.

The educational campaign held included the popularization of best practices in organic agriculture, energy conservation and biodiesel production.

The activity, also spearheaded by SM City, was participated in by West Negros College Ecological Waste Management Program, Negros Organic Agriculture Movement, FOREST, Inc., Visayas Network on Climate Change, Green Renewable Independent Power Producers, Inc. Solar Generation Youth – Pilipinas, Green Alert, Girl Scouts of the Philippines Bacolod City Chapter and Soroptimist International-Bacolod. The participant groups were among the lead covnernosin the 2007 Earth Day celebration.

R-Day was held in preparation for the Feb. 2 Recycling Market Day celebration at SM City and the 2008 International Earth Day celebration in April.
