With the world becoming more borderless, thanks to the Internet, global celebrations are gaining wider support as more people gain easy and quick access to information. This week has one occasion that has gained global attention more so because of information more speedily delivered through online means.
While traditional celebrations – like International Human Rights Day and May Day — have gained continued support, later commemorations have started to gain just as much appeal, like Earth Day, which is running toward just its fourth decade of observance.
This week’s Earh Day celebration calls for concerted action on climate change to reduce its ill effects on mankind and for the reduction of the use of carbon dioxide, which is harmful to life.
To commemorate the April 22nd global celebration, we are focusing our lead stories on the issue including our cover story – which details the efforts of young people in the Visayan region to cushion the ill effects of environmental degradation.
Our contributor, Razceljan Salvarita, a pro-environment advocate, relates the Solar Generation volunteers’ three-day gathering, was spiced with fun activities, that allowed them to draw up an organizational program for implementation this year.
Our youth page features the views of some young people on various situations when they said “no” for an answer – to cheating, to vices, and even to second chances in love. It’s a liberating experience, one wrote.
It pays to ask where your food comes from, stressed one “everyday environmentalist” in a greening tip we came across in The Nature Conservancy website, one of the organizations activity in the promotion of efforts to conserve land, water and life. The other practical guidance reminds us of the need to take the stairs, especially in tall buildings. We took the liberty of using the materials with the hope that nature Conservancy’s environmental gospel could reach as many people, especially on this side of the world – for us to always love our Planet Earth.
