Soldiers to get housing
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Houses for homeless soldiers assigned in Negros Occidental will soon to be constructed by Army engineers at the military reservation area in Brgy. Minoyan, Murcia.

Lt. Col. Noel Detoito, commander of the Army’s 542nd Engineering Construction Battalion, yesterday said they will be constructing the 150 housing units for Army soldiers under the “bayanihan system” in a 4.7 hectare military reservation area.

Detoito said the P5 million of the P12 million housing project will be financed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines Savings and Loans Incorporated.

The housing project in Brgy. Minoyan, Murcia, is among the 16 Kalinga sa Kawal Housing Projects, which is a joint effort of the Philippine Army, Gawad Kalinga and AFPSLAI, across the country.

A similar housing project was already started at Camp Macario Peralta in Jamindan, Capiz, home of the 3rd Infantry Division, and another will soon start at Camp Leon Kilat in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.

Army chief, Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado, yesterday led the groundbreaking of the Kalinga sa Kawal Housing Project and lowering of the capsule in Murcia, which was witnessed by Murcia Mayor Esteban Coscolluela, Lt. Gen. Pedro Ike Insierto, AFP Central Command chief, Brig. Gen. Nestor Ochoa, Col. Honorato de los Reyes and retired Army chief Jaime Echevarea who represented the AFPSLAI.

Ibrado said he had been pushing for soldiers of the 303rd Infantry Brigade to avail of the housing project since he was their commander in 2003.

It is now a reality for homeless soldiers in Negros, he said.

The house and lot package costs P60,000, which will be paid in a two-year period by the beneficiaries, according to Detoito.

The construction of a model house at the Minoyan military reservation area, is set to start next week.

Detoito said the Kalinga sa Kawal housing project is only one of many high-impact projects of the Philippine Army nationwide.*GPB
