| A rural women’s forum was held recently in Dumaguete City under the auspices of the Department of Agrarian Reform in Negros Oriental, a press release from DAR said.
With the ratification of the United Nations Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in 1981, our government is bound to protect Filipino women from inequalities and discrimination in civil, economic, social, political and cultural realms, the press release also said.
The activity was aimed at conducting information dissemination on the rights of women in the agrarian sector, and to gather feedback on the implementation of policies, programs and projects of the department especially on the mainstreaming of gender issues and concerns, particularly on equal access to land and the support services under the CARP.
Director Nerissa Garcia of the DAR said that “age discrimination for women workers is also one of the advocacies that the Arroyo administration would want to be achieved before 2010.”
In other countries, a 75-year old skilled worker can still land a job, but not in the Philippines age discrimination results in the displacement of most Filipino women workers, even if they are skilled, she added.*
