| Governor Emilio Macias II has pledged P2.5 million for the establishment of a sanitary landfill in Barangay Tunga-tunga, Dauin, Negros Oriental.
He announced his commitment during the recent meeting of the Metro Dumaguete Mayors at the conference room of the Provincial Capitol, in Dumaguete City.
Present during the meeting were mayors Agustin Perdices of Dumaguete, Antonio Renacia of Sibulan, Nelson Ruiz – San Jose, Bentham de la Cruz – Amlan, Rodulfo Gonzales Jr. – Valencia, Lenin Alviola – Bacong and Rodrigo Alanano – Dauin.
Macias said he believes in the concept of clustering of efforts with the neighboring local government units, especially with a project like the sanitary landfill.
The meeting was called primarily to discuss and identify the source of funds for the initial operation of the landfill, he added.
The first year operation of the project will need at least P5 million, because they have to purchase the land, and to establish facilities such as a motor pool, and heavy equipment, among others.
Perdices pledged to give P500,000 as contribution for the project.
The group also agreed to source the remaining fund requirement from representatives George Arnaiz (2nd district) and Henry Pryde Teves (3rd district) at P1 million each.
Under Republic Act 9003, or the Solid Waste Management Act. all local government units are mandated to close down all open dumpsites by 2007, and establish a sanitary landfill.*MA
