Bacoleño killed
in road mishap

A man was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a car in a highway collision in Bacolod City late Tuesday, the Traffic Management Unit said yesterday.

Antonio Alcobar, 34, of Kahirup Village, Brgy. Singcang-Airport, Bacolod, died on the spot of head injuries when his red Honda XRM crashed into the white Kia Sportage driven by Jose Maynard Bariquit near a mall at Lacson Street, Brgy. Mandalagan, in the city, at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, PO2 Regino Rex Eduardo, TMU investigator, said.

Nico Algoy, 18, who was riding with Alcobar, sustained only injuries on his arm, Aksyon Radyo reported.

Alcobar, who was not wearing a helmet, and was allegedly intoxicated with liquor, tried to avoid hitting a woman crossing the street when he lost control of the motorcycle which crossed the other lane and crashed into the Sportage, Eduardo said.

Algoy said in a radio interview that Alcobar was indeed intoxicated and that they were driving at more than 60 kilometers per hour.

Bariquit, meanwhile, said that he was driving slowly when the two men’s motorcycle hit his vehicle.

Eduardo said Bariquit was released from the Police Station 3 lock-up cell after his 18-hour detention period lapsed without any charges filed against him.*PP

2 collared for robbery

A trisikad driver and a minor were nabbed allegedly in the act of stealing P90,000 worth of machinery and equipment from a shop in Bacolod City yesterday, police reports said.

Michael Magbanua, 19, and a 14-year-old boy, both of Purok Malipayon, Brgy. 35, Bacolod, were arrested by Police Station 1 members led by Chief Inspector Santiago Rapiz and PO3 Joel Manojo, near the BNH Marketing at Door No. 3, SYV Building, Lacson street, in the city, at about 2:30 a.m., police records showed.

The two were caught while allegedly loading six electric motors valued at around P90,000, from the shop into a black trisikad, police reports said.

Their other companion, a certain “Jake”, escaped, Rapiz said.

Magbanua said he was just hired to haul the items on his vehicle.

The teenager was endorsed to the Bacolod Social Development Center, Rapiz said.

He said he saw the three help each other put the machines on the trisikad and that they even tried to flee as he called for reinforcements.

Robbery charges were being readied against the suspects yesterday, Rapiz said.*PP

Man nabbed for swindling

A man who posed as a supervisor of a burger store chain and allegedly stealing cash from a branch of the commercial outfit is now facing swindling charges, the police said yesterday.

The cases were filed against John Benedict Villanueva of No. 47 Ramylu Village, Brgy. Tangub, Bacolod, at the City Prosecutor’s Office, Police Station 1 commander, Chief Inspector Santiago Rapiz, said.

Villanueva, 30, was nabbed by Police Station 1 members led by PO1 Robert Torreño at a branch of Burger Machine at Yulo’s Park, Brgy. 16, in the city, at about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, police records showed.

Shop attendants Estrelle Joy Casiple and Rinalyn Pakingking told the police that Villanueva, who identified himself as Mike Villa, took P3,500 from their cash box while posing as the burger chain’s area manager.

Pakingking, who knew that their real supervisor is George Jocson, informed him and asked for police assistance.

Villanueva admitted that he pretended to be the boss of the outfit, but denied stealing the money even when it was recovered from his possession by the police.

Villanueva, who had also been arrested by Police Station 2 members for allegedly stealing the cellphone of a rent-a-car owner last month, said he resorts to these activities because legitimate businesses would not hire him due to his records, which, he said, are reflected in the National Bureau of Investigation database.*PP
