RP holds Tajikistan
in scoreless draw

ILOILO CITY – Ten-man Philippines held defending champion Tajikistan to a scoreless draw in a highly-physical encounter yesterday, while Brunei and Bhutan fought to 1-all stalemate in Group B of the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers here.

The Philippines played the last 69 minutes at the Iloilo Sports Complex with 10 men, after defender Jason Cordova was sent off in the 21st minute for punching Tajikistan striker Khamikov Numondzhon in the face.

At the Barotac Nuevo Football Plaza, Bhutan took a 12th minute lead through Dendup Nawang, before Salleh Muhammad Khayrun equalized 14 minutes from the end, after pouncing on a cross by Kasmi Muhammad Maududi Himi.

NBA Governor’s Cup
plans underway

With the successful return of exciting basketball matches at the Tay Tung gym courtesy of the Negros Basketball Association, plans are underway for the staging of a Governor’s Cup cagefest in July, NBA president Oscar Bascon yesterday said.

The possibilities for future tournaments have materialized with the exciting ballgames Bacoleños witnessed during the Mayor’s Cup tournament which is having its championship round this week, Bascon said.

“The teams are so balanced and you can not expect a certain team to win every time they step into the hardcourt,” he added.

Losing its bid for an outright semi-finals slot alongside Red Bull Barako with a dismal 99-91 loss to Alaska Aces Wednesday, Coca-Cola Tigers gun for its seventh win today against Air21 Express in the PBA Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Tigers take on Express at the 4:50 p.m. first game while Magnolia, which takes on Purefoods in the 7:20 p.m. matchup, eyes its fifth win to improve its record.

Coca-Cola’s loss Wednesday night allowed Red Bull to get the solo lead with a 7-2 win-loss record after the Barakos kept its mastery over Welcoat via a 109-88 victory in the second game. The loss was Dragon’s sixth after nine games.
