| A teenager drowned and another is still missing after heavy rains brought by Typhoon “Butchoy” caused flooding in southern Negros Occidental.
The floods hit 11,265 residents in Kabankalan City, and San Enrique and Ilog towns, Provincial Social Welfare Officer Liane Garcia reported to Gov. Isidro Zayco .
The Provincial Disaster Management Team also reported a landslide in Purok 9, Barangay Minoyan, Murcia, 2:30 p.m. yesterday triggered by heavy rains.
The landslide was 30 meters long by 5 feet high rendering the road in the area impassable, the report said.
Zayco said he alerted the PDMT and the health and social welfare departments to respond to the needs of the flood victims.
Melanie Elardes and Marilyn Oliverio, both 15, were crossing the bridge in Barangay Guiljungan, Cauayan at 10 a.m. Monday when they were swept away by a sudden rush of floodwater.
The body of Oliverio was recovered while operations were ongoing to locate Elardes, whose body could have been washed into the sea by strong waves, Cauayan Mayor John Rey Tabujara said.
In Ilog town, 1,680 families with 8,400 dependents were affected by the flooding in barangays I, II, Calubang, Vista Alegre, Dancalan, Andulawan, Delicioso and Bocana.
Roads, the public plaza, the Ilog Elementary School, and other parts of the town were also flooded as waters began to rise again yesterday afternoon.
In San Enrique, 469 families with 2,806 dependents in barangays Bagonawa, Baliwagan, Sibucao, Guintorilan, Poblacion and Tabao Rizal were also hit by flooding.
In Kabankalan City, 12 families with 59 dependents from Barangay 6 were evacuated to the Kabankalan City Sports and Cultural Center.
In Valladolid town, partially affected by floods were barangays Ayungon, Guintorilan and Doldol, Zayco said.
The provincial government provided rice, sardines and noodles as assistance to the flood victims.
A National Disaster Coordinating Council advisory yesterday said heavy rains were expected to affect rivers, their tributaries and streams in Sipalay, Kabankalan, Himamaylan, La Carlota, Bago and Bacolod cities.
People living near mountain slopes are advised to be on alert for flashfloods and landslides, the NDCC advisory said.
People living near or along riverbanks and those in flood-prone low lying areas were also advised by the NDCC to be on alert for flooding.*CPG
