| West Negros University kept its unblemished record, cruising to a 99-88 semifinals win last night against Marwin Pawnshop to secure the first finals seat in the 2008 Negros Basketball Association Mayor’s Cup Summer Basketball Tournament at the Tay Tung gym.
The Mustangs will face in the championship the winner in the knockout game between the Province of Negros Occidental and the JPB/Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod at 5:30 p.m. today after the Capitol guys beat the Eagles, 79-73, last night in their first encounter in the semis.
JPV/CSA-B enjoys a twice-to-beat advantage over the Province after emerging as No. 2 squad in the eliminations.
Alfie Villariza’s 25 points for the Mustangs upstaged the 33-point performance of Andrew Deles for Marwin.
Meanwhile, The Province’s squad arranged a do-or-die game against the Eagles after the trio of Arnold Laureño, Mark Ramos and Jomarie Bayhon who combined for 61 points dominated their semis duel last night.
Laureño finished the game with 21 points while Ramos and Bayhon scored 20 points apiece and Rex Bayer contributed 13 to secure the Province’s team.
Jun Gelasan, former Negros Slasher Leo Bat-og, and Johnson Salazar tried to keep pace with the Capitol’s scoring machine but their pooled effort of 46 points fell short as the Province held on until the final buzzer sounded.*NAB
