| The Bago City boxing team returned home from Iloilo City Saturday with four gold medals and seven silvers to finish second to Davao del Norte, while the Bacolod Team claimed two titles to land in third place in the youth division of the 2008 PLDT-Smart National Youth, Women's and Senior Boxing Championships.
Christian Cordova delivered the first gold for Bago in the 30kg while John Salazar prevailed over his opponent in the 34kg to threaten Davao’s rule in the division.
Mark Sevilla claimed another gold for the Bagoeños in 50kg while national pool member Jimboy Vicera topped the 60kg for the four-gold output of Bago City.
Bacolod Team’s Gerson Nietes showed to those watching the finals at the Robinsons Mall in Iloilo City why he was named best boxer in the recent Puerto Princesa Palaro by clinching the title in the 36kg. His teammate Joren Labordo also collared the 31kg gold for Bacolod City.
Meanwhie, Davao del Norte captured eight golds to wrest the youth title for the fifth consecutive year but not without a cloud of controversy as complaints against officiating were aired during the tournament.
Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, who was watching the fight between Bacolod’s Genesis Servania and Davao’s Jerwin Ancajas said he was surprised at how quick the judges were scoring for Ancajas, considering that only a minute was gone in the fight and no fighter was having a clear advantage.
Puentevella said he will push for a review and evaluation of the fight judges before Bacolod hosts the next installment of the national championships in October this year.*NAB
