P47-M loan eyed for education
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the provincial school board of Negros Oriental has authorized Gov. Emilio Macias II to apply for a P47-million loan with the Development Bank of the Philippines through a program called “Basta NegOr Education 104.”

This developed after the provincial Department of Education headed by Superintendent Licerio Napao submitted a list of the school building projects in every town, during the meeting with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Negros Oriental chapter headed by Mayor Reynaldo Tuanda, for a possible cost-sharing scheme.

Napao said this is a joint project of the province and the DepEd headed by Secretary Jesli Lapus.

Under the agreement, DepEd will provide one teacher each for every classroom built by the provincial government.

Napao said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, during her recent visit in Dumaguete City, was informed of the project, and was supporting it.

The project is intended to meet the need for more classrooms due to the expected rise in enrolment in the public schools this school year.

In the list submitted to the 19 municipalities it was agreed that each LGU will share the cost of labor and construction materials, like sand and gravel.

Macias also informed the League of Mayors that each board member will be given an allocation of one school building with two classrooms that they will help identify in coordination with the mayors.

The governor said he wants the school building project to be prioritized this year, and that he is requesting DepEd for additional teachers.*JG
