| A two-day adventure race dubbed “Kali-Karera”, that will explore the scenic spots of Barangays Igmaya-an, Kumaliskis, and Bunga all in Don Salvador Benedicto town, starts today with participants from the cities of the Bacolod and Iloilo joining in the competition.
Event chairman Romwell Gubuan of Western Visayas Caving Association said Kali-Karera adopts a two-person team format with the racers covering 20s stations in two days.
Before the contestants start hiking from DS Benedicto town proper to Malatan-og River for the first leg of the race, they will compete in parlor games and improvised fun events, Gubuan said.
As in a typical adventure race, contestants will have to locate various checkpoints to validate that they were able to complete the indicated course of the race.
Gubuan said they chose to hold an adventure race in DS Benedicto because it is a fitting playground for outdoor enthusiasts with its landscape that offers that nature-lovers look for.
“DSB is an emerging tourist spot with attractions such as waterfalls, caves, campsites and rivers,” he said.
The champion in the Kali-Karera will receive P15,000 plus a trophy while the first runner-up gets P12,000 and second runner-up P9,000 plus trophies.
Adventure racing is a trend in the outdoor sports competition that requires racers’ physical endurance, teamwork, sense of direction, and common sense. Running, river tubing, trekking, swimming, and “special events” are just some of the activities that can be expected in the two-day competition in DS Benedicto.*NAB
