Mayor’s Cup elims

Ely Olarte could not do anything wrong last night, unleashing a barrage of points from every corner of the hardcourt to lead the 94-67 rout of West Negros University of the University of St. La Salle and complete the Mustangs’ sweep of the elimination round of the 2008 Negros Basketball Association Mayor’s Cup Summer Basketball Tournament at Tay Tung Po Hang gym.

Olarte’s 40 points secured the win for the Mustangs who finished their seven elimination assignments unbeaten while the Stingers absorbed their fourth defeat in six outings.

Topscoring for USLS’ losing effort was Mark Sabusap with 18 points while Richard Caberte added 11 and Mark Gonzalez and Elvin Diaz contributed 9 points apiece.

In the second game, JPV/Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod trounced University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos to secure its fourth win while the Rams ended its elimination campaign with 2 wins and four losses.

JPV will face Coverdale Resort tomorrow in the 5:30 game for its last assignment while USLS hopes to salvage some its pride after WNU’s last night’s thrashing when it tackles cellar dweller NOBC/ Tough Truck/Bus Group at 2 p.m. Marwin Pawnshop will face Province of Negros Occidental at 3:45 p.m..

Quarterfinals begin on Sunday with the top two teams going on a by while those in the third and sixth spot respectively, will have a do-or-die game with the winner facing the No. 1 team.

Teams in the fourth and fifth spot of the standings will also figure in a knockout match with the winner clashing against the No. 2 squad. Top two winners in the quarterfinals will have a twice-to-beat advantage.*NAB
