| Region 6 police director Isagani Cuevas yesterday alerted policemen in the Western Visayas against the resurgence of the assassination activities of the New People’s Army.
Cuevas gave the warning following the recent liquidation of a police colonel and the ambush of a military convoy in Albay and in North Cotabato.
Cuevas also advised all police units to take maximum precautionary measures against tactical offensives of the NPA.
Supt. Narciso Guarin, deputy chief of the Human Resource and Doctrine Development of the Police Regional Office 5, was gunned down in Legaspi City, Albay, May 5.
In North Cotabato, three soldiers were killed, and 21 were injured in an ambush perpetrated by about 100 rebels early this week.
The PNP will distribute 127 police inspectors who recently graduated from Philippine National Police Academy, among regional mobile group units nationwide.
In February, a three-man partisan unit of the NPA shot dead a policeman in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, police records show.
PNP chief Avelino Razon said in a statement that the series of armed hostilities in the past two weeks indicate an escalation of offensive actions of the NPA.
Razon said these guerilla-type tactics of ambuscades and selective hits on target of opportunity are trademarks of the only tactical capability of the CPP-NPA.
Earlier, suspected rebels burned two transloading stations of sugar milling companies in Toboso, burned a sugarcane plantation in Calatrava, and disarmed two militiamen of their firearms at a police outpost in Sagay City, police records also showed.*GPB
