NAT’L BOXING TOURNAMENT
Bago sends 3 pugs
to youth semifinals

Bago City sent a strong signal of intent in ending Davao Del Norte's reign in the youth division of the 2008 PLDT-Smart National Open, Youth and Women's Amateur Boxing Championships when it sent three boxers to the semifinals late Tuesday in Iloilo City.

Cottonweight Erick Jun Hondrado, school boys' junior mosquitoweight Rogen Ladon and junior paperweight campaigner Romel Tompong registered Referee Stopped Contest-Compulsory Count Limit victories as Bago, whose grassroots program produced Olympic medalists Mansueto and Roel Velasco, matched Davao with three semifinalists at the Robinsons Mall.

Fight mars Barako win

Red Bull convincingly won against Sta. Lucia Realty last night, 105-78, but the victory was marred by a fight between imports Adam Parada of the Barakos and Wesley Wilson of the Realtors with less than four minutes left in the ballgame in the SMART-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum. Both imports were ejected.

Cyrus Baguio steered the Barakos to its sixth win to top the standings with 6 wins and 2 losses while Sta. Lucia slipped to fourth spot with its 4-3 win-loss card behind Coca-Cola and Talk N Text 5-2 output.

Baguio was hot in the second quarter, scoring 10 of his 16 points as Red Bull pulled away from pursuing Sta. Lucia, outscoring the latter, 24-11.

Pacquiao battles Diaz
June 28 in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – World Boxing Council super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao expects the toughest fight of his career June 28 when he moves up in weight to face WBC lightweight champion David Diaz.

The 29-year-old Philippines legend could complete a quest to capture five world titles in as many weight classes when he fights the 31-year-old American for the lightweight crown in a showdown of southpaws.

"This will be my hardest-fought battle," Pacquiao said. "It has been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division's world champion.
