| West Negros University underscored its supremacy last night with a 97-90 decision against Province of Negros Occidental to claim its 6th victory in the Negros Basketball Association Mayor’s Cup Summer Basketball Tournament at Tay Tung Po Hang gym.
The win assured the Mustangs of a seat in the quarterfinals that will start Sunday, with only the game against University of St. La Salle tomorrow at 6 p.m. remaining in its assignment board in the elimination round.
Benjie Vergara led WNU with 26 points while Ely Olarte added 24 and Alfie Villariza 21 to pull the team away from the determined pursuit launched by the Province’s squad.
Led by Joemarie Bayhon with 27 points and Marlon Talatala’s 17, Province absorbed its fourth loss in its six outings and will face Marwin Pawnshop on Saturday in the last day of the eliminations.
In the second game, Coverdale escaped with a 98-92 win against NOBC Tough Truck Bus Group to improve its win-loss record at 3-3 while NOBC slipped further down the cellar with five losses and one win.*NAB
