Another Negrense is making a name in the go-kart world with 10-year-old Basti Escalante outracing his older and more experienced rivals from Manila and Cebu to rule the Cebu Intersport Go-Kart Championship cadet division held Sunday in Cebu City.

Basti, who was accompanied by his uncle, Mayor Manuel Escalante of Manapla, topped the event and bagged the title.

“He is the only one from Negros Occidental who participated in the event and we are very proud of his achievement,” Mayor Escalante said.

He added that his nephew is preparing for his next tournament that will be held in Macau.

Last year, 14-year-old Stefano Marcelo secured a seat in the history of karting for winning 2007 Asian Karting Open Championship Macau Kart Prix held at the Kartodromo de Coloane.

With the heart of a champion and a supportive family, it will not be long before Basti of Manapla, Negros Occidental will follow in the footsteps of Marcelo and register his name in the list of winners in international karting events.*NAB
