| The Special Weapons Action Tactics training in Negros Oriental has been extended from 30 days to 45 days, Police Provincial Director, Senior Supt. Melvin Buenafe, said yesterday.
The graduation of the SWAT team is tentatively scheduled on May 14 with the actual demonstration of an explosives entry.
The original 30-day training was interrupted by bad weather and the visit of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Buenafe said.
The SWAT Negros Oriental is composed of 40 police officers from different police stations and units of the PNP Provincial Command.
Among the trainings they have conducted are close quarter battle, bus entry, firearms dysfunction, motorcycle entry, explosives entry with sniper, rappelling and the street survival.
Buenafe said he is very proud of the SWAT unit since he has observed the dedication and determination of each of the team members in learning various tactics in the training.
In fact, he is excited to see the performance of the unit during its graduation on May 14, he said.
Last Friday, the SWAT team underwent a whole day training and mastery of the different styles of rappelling at the Negros Oriental State University in Bajumpandan, Dumaguete City.
The instructors were assisted by the Negros Oriental Search and Rescue Team headed by Boyet Somoza.
SWAT Trainer, SPO2 Isidro Temprosa Jr., said the rappelling is very important in SWAT training because it can be used during operations in high-rise buildings.
The SWAT students were quick to learn the different rappelling styles since they already have the basic of the training during the recruitment stage of the PNP, he said.
PNP Regional Director Ronald Roderos said Dumaguete and Negros Oriental need a SWAT team because of the growing population and business establishments.* MA
