WNU remains unbeaten
in NBA summer tourney
BY NIDA BUENAFE

Living up to its reputation as the top collegiate squad in Bacolod City today, West Negros University Mustangs escaped with a two-point victory against Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod/JPV, 81-79, last night in the 2008 NBA Mayor’s Cup Summer Basketball in Bacolod Taytung Gym to nail its fifth win and remain as the only unbeaten team in the tournament.

With playmaker Alfie Villariza taking charge of WNU’s offense, finishing the game with 21 big points, the wards of coach Dennis Tumayan foiled CSA-B/JPV last three attempts in the dying minutes to protect its feeble two-point lead and win the ballgame.

Trailing the Mustangs at one point entering the final quarter, CSA-B/JPV needed only to convert two of its last three shots to reverse the outcome but the leather ball simply refused to go in, giving WNU the chance to hold on to the lead as the clock expires.

Triple-C tops bowlfest
BY HERNAND GARCINIEGO

Triple-C/ASSFBI captured the overall championship in the men’s division, as Condura ASSFBI Ladies brought home the title in the women’s category, of the 3rd Sharp Friendship Cup Open Trio Invitational Bowling Tournament at the New Top’s Millennium Plaza in Bacolod City.

Negros Professional Bowlers Club/LJP Trading MJS bagged the bracket championship.

Consolation prize winners were NEMA K of C 5665 of Kid Leyes and ON-BACIBA Ladies in the distaff bracket.

Sta. Lucia Realty
beats Welcoat

Sta. Lucia Realty made sure that it will not make the same mistake before the league paused for its annual All-Star extravaganza by dominating Welcoat, 111-97 yesterday.

The Realtors played good defense and refused to give an inch despite the persistence of the paint masters led by its import Marquis Gainous.

SLR put the handcuffs on Gainous in the first quarter, and sustained their momentum to secure the win.
