Another suspect in
slay of businessman nabbed

Four of the five suspects in the robbery-slay of a businessman in Manapla, Negros Occidental, in February, are now accounted for with the arrest of Mark Lester Bia-is in Hacienda Unson, Brgy. Andres Bonifacio, Cadiz City, Thursday, police records show.

Senior Insp. Jose Laboyo, Manapla police chief, yesterday said Bia-is, Ramil Berito who was arrested last week by troopers of 6th Regional Mobile Group in Brgy. San Pablo, Manapla, Mark Edward Prino and a 16-year-old whose identity is being withheld, were positively identified by a witness as those who stabbed to death businessman Jose Lim in the town on Feb. 10.

Laboyo said they are now negotiating the surrender of another minor, who was also linked to the slay of Lim.

Police investigations showed that Lim, and his brother-in-law, Efren Samodio, were on their way home, when they were waylaid, stabbed and robbed by the five suspects.

Lim and Samodio fought back. Police investigations showed Lim died at the Riverside Medical Center, while Samodio survived a stab wound in the stomach.

Prino and the 16-year-old were arrested by the Manapla police immediately after the killing.

Laboyo said Berito was also involved in the hold-up of Liza Panes, an employee of a Keru Burger, who was divested of P1,200 in cash and her cellphone, on Feb.8.

The owner of the Keru Burger, however, did not press charges against the suspects, while Samodio, brother-in-law of Lim, has yet to file charges against his attackers, Laboyo also said.

Two months ago, five unidentified suspects also robbed at gunpoint an hacienda cashier of P140,000 in payroll money in Brgy. Purisima, Manapla.

Police probers are also looking into the possibility that members of the hold-up gang were also involved in other robbery-hold-up cases in the upland areas of the town, and neighboring cities.

Laboyo, assisted by 12th Infantry Battalion soldiers, led a team of Manapla policemen in serving the arrest warrant of Bia-is in Brgy. Andres Bonifacio, which was issued by Judge Felipe Banzon who also denied him bail.*GPB
