| Garbage disposal in the city will be manageable, as soon as the heavy equipment detailed to the Dumaguete City dumpsite becomes serviceable, Environment and Natural Resources officer Rolly Clamonte assured yesterday.
Clamontesaidthemountainsofgarbagedumpedattheroadsidein front of the city dumpsiteWednesday was just temporary, because thebulldozerwasstillunderrepair.
The spread of garbage was brought to the attention of Mayor Agustin Perdices by Barangay Candau-ay officials.
Perdices immediately ordered that the garbage blocking the roadand preventingvehiclesfrom passing through, be acted on. He also directed theCityEngineer’sOfficeandthe ENROtoprocessthedocuments forrentingheavy equipmentto transferthegarbagefromtheroad tothedumpsite.
Clamontesaidthis kind of problemwould not come up ifthere are atleasttwoheavyequipmentoperatingatthedumpsite.
He said garbage volume has reduced by 50 percent, compared to several years back, when the strict segregation of waste was not yet implemented.
The garbage ofDumaguetereducedfrom 60 tonsto30 tons,or 30,000 kilos per day,aftertheimplementationofRepublic Act 9003, or the SolidWasteManagement Act, Clamonte said.
He expressed fears that garbage might increase if the barangay officials become lukewarm inimplementingthesolidwastemanagementlaw intheirareas.
Heencouragedthem tocontinuethecampaign on segregation ofgarbage, to furtherreducethe garbageofthecity.
The coming in ofnewinvestorslikerestaurantsandbusinessestablishments will also contributetotheincreasinggarbage, he said.
Clamontesaid the Dumaguetedumpsiteis good for two more years providedthere is propermanagement of thedumping of garbage.*MA
