Col. Cesar Yano, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army, called on Dumaguete Bishop John Du at the Bishop’s Palance in Bagacay, Dumaguete recently.
Yano said this is a recognition of the role of church leaders who are among the major stakeholders in a local government unit-led counter-insurgency campaign.
Du said the church welcomes the presence of the military in the province. He encouraged soldiers to participate in the Basic Ecclesiastical Community activities currently being undertaken in all parishes under the diocese.
Yano assured the Bishop that soldiers immersed in the hinterland barangays will support spiritual activities, and emphasized his soldiers’ respect for human rights in the performance of their duties.
“The discipline of my soldiers is non-negotiable,” he added.
Yano also briefed the prelate on his programs of action centered on touching base with the locals, especially in the remote communities by way of educating them on the nature of insurgency in the country, and its bad effects on the social and economic conditions.
Meanwhile, Yano and his staff attended the Holy Mass for the Annual Renewal of Vocation of clergies under the Diocese of Dumaguete upon the invitation of the Bishop.
Following the rituals, Yano briefed the priests assigned in the south and assured them of the support of the military in their activities that are aimed at uplifting the living condition of the masses.*RG
