The second and third placers in the 2007 Bar Examinations, Jennifer Ong and Yvanna Maalat, are Bacolod residents who were consistent honor students during their elementary and high school years in the city.

Ong, the second of the four children of TH Plaza store owners Ong On Long and Preciosa, belongs to St. John’s Institute Batch ’99, and completed her legal management pre-law from Ateneo de Manila University. She finished her law studies at the University of the Philippines and placed second among the 1,289 bar passers out of the 5,626 who took the examinations September last year.

‘Rebels burn
plantation of mayor’

Suspected New People's Army rebels burned a sugarcane plantation of Calatrava Mayor Alfonso Baguio and San Carlos City Vice-Mayor Gerardo Valmayor in Sitio Danicup, Brgy. San Isidro, Calatrava, Friday, a day before the rebel group marked its 39th founding anniversary.

Senior Inspector Danilo Zuniega, Calatrava police chief, yesterday said at least five hectares of the plantation were burned, and estimate of damage has not been made yet.

Police tagged three alleged members of the Roselyn Jean Pelle Command, as the ones responsible for the burning of Baguio’s farms, and of Valmayor, who is the cousin of his wife.moremoremore

Police link RPA-ABB to ambush

ILOILO CITY – Police have tagged members of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade, a breakaway faction  identified with expelled rebel leader Nilo de la Cruz, as the suspects in the ambush-slay of a policeman and injuries of two others, in Janiuay, Iloilo, Friday.

Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, Iloilo police director, yesterday said they will file murder charges and two counts of frustrated murder against RPA-ABB leader Bernardo Ayawan, alias Ka Jack, and nine of his companions for the killing of PO3 Gildo Sullivan, and the injuries of PO3 Francisco Gabiano and PO3 Jonathan Limas in Brgy. Patong-Patong, Janiuay town.

Police investigations show that Sullivan and two other policemen responded to the complaint of Jose Neil Palermo, who claimed he was mauled by the group of Ayawan, in a place about four kilometers away from the town poblacion.moremoremore
