Zubiri to speak at SIFI
conference, assembly

Senator Miguel Zubiri, the author of the Bio-Fuels Act of 2007, will be the guest of honor and speaker during the Sugar Industry Foundation Inc. Stakeholders’ Conference and 37th General Assembly at the Planta Hotel, Bacolod City today, a press release from SIFI said.

SIFI will present its reports and program accomplishments to its stakeholders and recognize its program partners, outstanding employees and previous officers and members of its Board of Trustees.

Also expected to attend are Sugar Regulatory Administration chief Rafael Coscolluela, Undersecretary of Labor Lourdes Trasmonte, and Director Alex Maraan of the Bureau of Rural Workers, the press release said.

Globe, rural bankers
organize mng’t confab

Globe Telecom and the Confederation of Central Luzon Rural Banks Inc. organized this year’s Rural Bankers’ Management Conference that tackle the benefits of “banking on technology,” a press release from the company said. 

The conference was attended by at least 150 rural banking delegates, including  chairmen, chief executive officers, directors, and senior officers of rural banks.

Globe Business Head Gil Genio, who delivered the  keynote address, is a strong advocate of the vision of CCLRB to help small banking industry players utilize technology to gain competitive advantage, the press release said.

Layoffs down in
1st half of ’07: DOLE

Retrenchments and layoffs during the first half of 2007 dropped by 65.5 percent as the number of establishments which closed down or reduced workers due to economic difficulties also declined, latest figures of the Department of Labor and Employment show.

This translates to a decrease in the number of retrenched workers by about 39,000 – from 59,376 in first half of 2006 to 20,478 in the same period in 2007.

Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics BLES figures  show establishments that filed retrenchment report with the DOLE declined by 54 percent – from 2,979 in the first semester of 2006 to 1,363 in the same period in 2007, of which 255 were closures and 1,115 were those that reduced workers.
