| Strive for excellence and be a leader of change.”
This challenge was thrown yesterday by Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado, commanding general of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Central Command, to graduates of Domingo Lacson National High School, in Bacolod City.
Ibrado also stressed that being poor should not be a reason not to strive for success.
Ibrado said there is basis for the accusations that the rich have caused more misery to the poor. He, however, said “We should not blame the rich why we are poor”.
While they may have the initial advantage, it is not a guarantee that graduates of exclusive schools will always excel, compared to most, if not all products of public schools, he said.
Ibrado, who spent his elementary and high school education in public schools, said he observed the state of deterioration in public school system. “Feeling sorry is not enough, we have to strive to restore the glory of the public school system,” he stressed.
What needs to be done is to bring being sorry to action, to convert regret to reform, to lift apathy to compassion, and to convert that into tangible development, Ibrado said.
Ibrado is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy.*GPB
