Pursue truth, graduates told

“Truth is both the end and the means of science,” Dr. Ma. Christina Padolina, speaker at the recent 95th Commencement Exercises at Silliman University in Dumaguete said about the practice of science and its moral and spiritual dimensions, a press release from the school said.

Addressing the graduating class of 774 students, eight of them with magna cum laude and 58, cum laude honors, Padolina said the pursuit of truth and one’s faith go together in science.

Padolina, who is the president of Centro Escolar University and a former Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education, cited physicist and theologian Dr. John Polkinghorne who wrote in his book: “The whole practice of science depends upon the acceptance of certain moral values.”

Padolina said she hopes the moral and spiritual perspectives of science would serve as light posts in their life journey lest they become distracted by the gadgetry or blinded by the glitter of the inventions.

The commencement exercises were held for the first time at the Amphitheater that was refurbished with support from the Silliman alumni chapter in San Diego, in the United States, the press release added.*
