No rice shortage
in NegOr -- NFA

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The National Food Authority in Negros Oriental yesterday assured that the province is not experiencing rice shortage, amid public concerns over the recent increase in the prices of commercial rice.

NFA assistant provincial manager Francisco Lorico Jr. said the grains agency has a buffer stock of 40,000 bags of rice, enough to address the requirements of the province.

About 200,000 additional bags of rice to be imported from either Vietnam or Thailand are also expected to arrive on a staggered basis to cover the next six months, Lorico  added.

The finest products of Negros Oriental were showcased at the National Trade Fair at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City recently, Senior Tourism Operations Officer Myla Mae Abellana said yesterday.

Participants in the trade fair were producers from 17 regions in the country. The event was aimed at providing a venue for the remarkable artistry and craftsmanship of Filipinos, organizers said.

Exhibitors from Negros Oriental were Dr. Stella Lezama of Orient Gifts, Roy Alcaide - HIKABAN, Reena Diago - DJD Handicrafts, and Narima Tahir - Pearls and Gems, all member sellers of the Sidlakang Negros Village Showroom, and Glen Cadorna of La Libertad Weavers Association.

Tuting hits back
at port counsel

BY ROMY AMARADO

Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices slammed the criticism against him by the legal counsel of an arrastre company, for his alleged “inaction” on the ongoing labor problem in the city port.

“It is a mere spectacle designed to make the lawyer appear good to his client,” Perdices said, referring to Joel Obar, counsel for Prudential Customs and Brokerage Inc.

He added that Obar is trying to impress his client that he is really fighting for its rights by criticizing him for alleged lack of political will in handling the brewing dispute at the port.
