MANILA – Philippine farmers on yesterday warned of a worsening rice crisis and said prices were expected to soar amid an expected lean harvest next month.
Based on their own estimates, production output would only be 1.9 million metric tons that would last only two months, said Jimmy Tadeo chairman of the National Rice Farmer's Council.
The same period last year saw production in excess of two million metric tons but "there was no global shortage then" he said.

The Philippines will get 1.5 million metric tons of rice annually from Vietnam starting this year, Malacañang said in a press release yesterday.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo witnessed the exchange of the instrumentalities between the two countries on the three-year agreement on the sidelines of the Philippine Reform Agenda Forum organized by the World Bank at the Fontana Conference Center in Clark, Pampanga.
The Memorandum of Agreement was earlier signed by Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and Vietnamese Industry and Trade Minister Yu Huy Hoang.

Restaurant owners, tourism council members and other tourism stakeholders in Bacolod City are invited to a consultation seminar on the Rules and Regulations to Govern the Accreditation of Restaurants on April 11 at the Parklane Hotel in Cebu City, the City Tourism Office said in a press release.
The Rules and Regulations to Govern the Accreditation of Restaurants are being proposed by the Office of Tourism Standards of the Department of Tourism.
The proposal classifies restaurants based on type of services, cuisine and concept. Once approved, the Rules shall be implemented nationwide.
